Scam Alert: Malaysians are getting SMS from fake ‘Pos Malaysia’ about undelivered parcels

January 24, 2024

Online scams seem to be on the rise once more, this time from perpetrators disguising to be from Pos Malaysia.

Over the past week, Malaysians have reported receiving SMS from unknown numbers claiming to be from ‘Pos Malaysia.’ The SMS claims that ‘due to an incorrect address and postal code’, your parcel could not be delivered. After which it would advise you to click into a link to ‘change your address and request a new delivery service’, and to do so within 12 hours.

The link provided is often a shortened link beginning with http://tinyurl.com, with no indication that it is a legitimate link from Pos Malaysia.

In most cases, the number that sent the SMS is from a personal mobile phone. Which is odd, because didn’t the Ministry of Communications and Digital instructed major telcos to block URL links in SMS last year?

Anyway, news of such scams have been making rounds on social media platforms Reddit and X of late, with netizens seeking verification from others to check if it is in fact a scam.

A viral post on X from user @ruffleseed alerting users about the scam has received over 6,000 reposts at the time of writing. Pos Malaysia has since responded to the post confirming that ‘the SMS is originating from an online scam syndicate.’

Elsewhere, this thread on Reddit was posted as far back as 10 days ago, with a similar message claiming to be from Pos Malaysia. However, it is interesting to note that it was sent from a 68886 number, and not from a personal number.

Pos Malaysia’s official X account has since released guidelines on how to take proactive steps to curb online scams that claim to be from the company, including reporting to the National Scam Response Centre (NSRC) hotline at 997. Alternatively, you may also WhatsApp the Commercial Crime Investigation Department (CCID) at 013-2111222.
