Apple to Work On Car Crash Detection for iPhone and Apple Watch

December 29, 2021

Apple recently announced that they are presently working on an Apple Watch and iPhone car crash detection feature that detects if the user is in a car crash and automatically dials the emergency services.

Apple is planning to bring this new car crash detection feature for iPhone and Apple Watch next year. The feature works even when the devices are placed on holders or in the user’s pocket.

How Do the iPhone and Apple Watch Car Crash Detection Features Work?

The feature will measure a sudden spike of gravity (“g” forces on impact). Reportedly, Apple has been testing it by collecting anonymous data from its users.

Apple has been testing the crash-detection feature in the past year by collecting data shared anonymously from iPhone and Apple Watch users, the documents show. Apple products have already detected more than 10 million suspected vehicle impacts, of which more than 50,000 included a call to 911.

Apple has been using the 911 call data to improve the accuracy of its crash-detection algorithm since an emergency call associated with a suspected impact gives Apple more confidence that it is indeed a car crash.

Apple Watch Fall Detection

Apple executed their first Fall Detection safety function for Apple Watch SE or Series 4 or later. The feature taps users on the wrist, sounds an alarm, and displays the alert to caution emergency contacts or calls emergency services when users experience a hard fall.

The displayed alert will wait for users’ response if the Watch still detects movement; however, if users are immobile for about a minute, the Watch will automatically call the emergency services. Moreover, the listed emergency contacts are also notified with a text message and the location of the incident.

Something To Look Forward To

Car crash detection is undoubtedly not something new. OnStar, the in-vehicle safety and security system, has provided the feature since 1996. However, Apple’s efforts in keeping its users safe with the rise of awareness on the dangers of using phones while driving won’t be in vain.
