‘They’re selling you down the river’, Musk hits out at Apple and OpenAI partnership
Tech billionaire Elon Musk has took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize Apple’s latest partnership with artificial intelligence company OpenAI.
This comes amid the hype of the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC), where the giant tech brand announced that it will integrate OpenAI’s AI chatbot ChatGPT into the upcoming software updates.
Based on the demonstration, ChatGPT will work hand-in-hand with Apple’s Siri to provide in-depth and helpful answers to queries. However, Apple emphasizes that permission is needed from the user before it sends queries over to ChatGPT, and that “your request and information will not be logged.”
This has not convinced SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk, who says that “Apple has no clue what’s actually going on once they hand your data over to OpenAI”, and that they’re “selling you down the river.” The world-renowned figure even threatened to ban Apple devices at his companies for concerns over security violations.
“If Apple integrates OpenAI at the OS level, then Apple devices will be banned at my companies. This is an unacceptable security violation,” Musk posted after the WWDC.
The post has since garnered widespread attention, with 81K repost as of the time of writing.
Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, has sued both the company and its current CEO Sam Altman at the beginning of March this year over claims that the company has strayed from its original mission to develop AI for the benefit of humanity and not for profit.
Musk has since founded his own AI company, xAI, to rival against OpenAI.
