Maybank to implement malware-detecting security feature on MAE app

By Timothy Teoh August 15, 2024

In continued efforts to safeguard customers, Maybank has announced that they will implement a new malware-detecting feature on the MAE app.

According to Maybank, the new security feature will automatically detect malware or risky permission settings whenever the MAE app is launched.

The ‘risky permission settings’ here is in reference to Developer mode and Accessibility mode, which can be enabled on smartphones to access advanced device settings. Both settings put your device at risk of installing unverified apps, or allowing malicious apps access to confidential details such as your banking information.

As previewed on Maybank’s security enhancement page, the MAE app will notify users if Developer mode or Accessibility mode is on, advising users to turn these modes off before proceeding to the MAE app.

Users can choose to click the ‘Proceed Anyway’ button to continue, however, it will be done at your own risk.

Maybank says the new security feature will roll out progressively to the MAE app starting 11 August 2024. Do keep in mind that this applies only to the MAE app, and not the Maybank2u App which will be discontinued completely by the end of the month.
