Here’s How You Can Clean a Fan in Just 10 Minutes
Spring cleaning season is here! Are you eager to turn your house sparkling clean? If yes, be sure to clean your fans since they tend to be forgotten. In this post, we’ll guide you on how to clean a fan in just 10 minutes.
Fans easily draw in dirt and accumulate dust. As such, it is compulsory to regularly clean your fan, ensuring a reasonable degree of cleanliness around the house.
Things you’ll need
- Dish soap or mild detergent
- Warm water
- Clothes/ towels
- Sponge
- Screwdriver (for fans with grate)
1) Switch the fan off and unplug it
To clean a fan, the first thing you should do is switch the fan off and unplug it from its power source. It sounds trivial and obvious, but you should never take the dangers of a fan in full speed lightly, especially since you’ll be in very close proximity to the blades.
Unplugging it completely from the power source will remove any chance that it will turn on accidentally, for example, if you inadvertently press the ‘ON’ button, or if someone turns the fan on with a remote control (if any) without knowing you are cleaning it.
2) Remove the fan’s grill
You will then need to remove the grill to access the inner components of the fan. This will vary depending on the type of fan you have. Although most fans uses a simple clip mechanism which you can easily unclip to detach the grill.
If there’s no tab, you may need a screwdriver to unscrew the grill. Do remember to keep the screws in a safe place to prevent injury and loss.
Some fans have two grills (on the back and the front of the fan). If so, then remove both grills.
3) Thoroughly clean your fan’s interior
The most effective way to clean a fan is by using a handheld vacuum with a brush attachment. Concentrate on cleaning every nook and crevice in the fan mechanism.
Carefully vacuum your fan’s interior but be careful to avoid damaging the components. After that, use some dish soap or mild detergent to clean your fan blades and wipe them down with a towel.
4) Scrub the fan’s grill
Over a long period, you’ll find that the fan’s grill will collect dust. As such, it’s just as important to clean the grill just as much as the blade.
Most fan grills do not have any electrical component, so it’s find to just rinse the grill or run some water over it. If you want, you can even add a few drops of soap.
Remember to scrub thoroughly with a sponge or cloth to remove any caked dust clinging to the grill. If the gaps in the grill are too small, you can try using an old toothbrush to get in between those crevices.
5) Let dry and reassemble the fan
Never reassemble the fan while it is still wet. If you do, you might risk getting water droplets into electrical components, which in turn might cause electrical failure.
As such, always ensure your fan is completely dry before reassembly. You only need to use a cloth to dry off the areas you’ve washed. Alternatively, you can air-dry the components in a sunny area for approximately 20 minutes if you have time.
After a proper reassembly, your fan should be as good as new!
Clean a fan in minutes
In general, you should clean your fan once a month. However, this time frame is not suitable for everyone, as circumstances vary according to several factors, such as the type of fan, cleaning habits, and level of dust.
As such, it’s wise to be alert and check if your fan needs cleaning so you can keep your living spaces clean and comfortable at all times.
