Data breach at US bank may affect some Wise customers
A recent data breach at the US-based bank Evolve Bank & Trust, may have affected the personal information of Wise customers.
Wise, a fintech company focused on global money transfers, had partnered with Evolve Bank & Trust from 2020 until 2023 to provide USD account details. In the aftermath of the hacking which took place in late May, Wise has since made a public announcement admitting that some of its customers’ data may have been stolen, and that investigations are still ongoing.
However, Wise has reassured customers that the data leak does not involve copies of any identification documents you’ve shared with Wise, as these have not been shared with Evolve Bank & Trust at any point.
Although the breach is believed to only involve customers in the US at this point, Wise customers from outside the region have received emails from Wise notifying them about the data breach. In the email, Wise reiterates that since they no longer work with Evolve Bank & Trust, their systems are not impacted by the breach. This means:
- your Wise account credentials, including your password, are safe, and you can use your account as normal
- you can continue to use your USD account details — these are no longer connected to Evolve Bank & Trust
- you can continue to use any Wise cards you may have as they were not impacted by this issue – your card number and PIN are safe
In the meantime, as a safety precaution, Wise encourages its customers to keep an eye out for suspicious calls, texts, or emails asking for sensitive information.
