Android 17 now official, already rolling out to Pixel users

Android 17 is finally here. Google has announced the latest iteration of its fabled mobile operating system, with the update rolling out first to supported Pixel devices before arriving on eligible Android smartphones and tablets later this year. The latest version focuses on multitasking, privacy and security, while also introducing new features for foldables and larger-screen devices.

One of the headline additions is Bubbles, a new multitasking feature that lets users turn almost any app into a floating window. By long-pressing an app icon, it can be launched as a compact overlay that stays on top of other apps, making it easier to reference notes, maps, messages or videos without constantly switching between apps. On tablets and foldables, these floating apps can be organised in a dedicated Bubble Bar for quicker access.

Google is also expanding its screen recording tools with Screen Reactions. Users can now record both their screen and themselves using the front-facing camera at the same time, making it easier to create reaction videos, tutorials or explainers directly from their device.

On top of that, foldable devices are getting a dedicated gaming mode that splits the screen into a 50/50 layout, with gameplay displayed on the top half and virtual controls on the bottom. Android 17 also promises smoother gaming performance thanks to improvements that reduce frame drops and stuttering.

Security and privacy receive a significant upgrade as well. Android 17 allows users to grant apps temporary access to precise location data instead of permanent permission, while contacts can now be shared selectively rather than giving apps access to an entire address book.

Google has also strengthened anti-theft protections. The enhanced “Mark as Lost” feature in Find Hub can lock a missing phone using biometrics, preventing thieves from accessing data or disabling tracking even if they know the device passcode. Android 17 further limits the number of PIN attempts allowed and increases the waiting period after repeated failed unlock attempts.

The platform’s security tools have been expanded too, with improvements to Live Threat Detection aimed at blocking more malicious apps and scam attempts, while Advanced Protection gains additional safeguards against sophisticated attacks.

For users with multiple Android devices, Android 17 introduces a new “Continue On” feature. Similar to Apple’s Handoff, it lets users quickly continue tasks between devices by surfacing recently used apps on another Android device and reopening them where they left off.

Other smaller additions include the option to hide app names on the home screen, expanded parental controls across Android devices, separate volume controls for digital assistants and additional customisation options for dark mode.

Behind the scenes, Android 17 introduces stricter memory management to prevent apps from consuming excessive RAM. Google says this should improve overall system responsiveness, multitasking performance and battery life. Premium Android devices will receive Gemini Intelligence features later this year, bringing deeper AI-powered assistance and proactive suggestions across the operating system.

Supported Pixel devices will be getting the Android 17 update soon enough, with the rollout already underway. Android 17 will also be available in beta from their partners, which include the likes of Xiaomi, Sharp, Honor, OnePlus, Lenovo, Vivo, iQoo, Realme and Oppo.
