Buy the upcoming Apple foldable or iPhone 18 Pro? Or just get the iPhone 17 Pro instead?

There are three certainties in life: death, taxes, and a new iPhone coming out around September every year. The upcoming Apple Event, set for 9 September 10AM PT (10 September, 1AM Malaysian time) will also be the first event led by new Cupertino CEO John Ternus, who replaced Tim Cook at the start of this month.

As for what actual hardware to expect, well of course it will be the new iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. Don’t expect major design changes compared to the current generation iPhone 17 Pro lineup though, as it’s pretty much expected to be a mild evolution rather than a big revolution.

You’ll likely see a new Apple A20 Pro system-on-chip, enhanced cameras and of course, some new colour options too. For the most part though, if you choose to skimp on your new iPhone by getting the iPhone 17 Pro, you probably won’t be missing out on much.

Curiously, many analysts are also expecting no base model iPhone this year, nor will there be a new iPhone Air. Ternus’ first year as CEO will apparently be the first year of Apple’s new release schedule, which will see staggered launches for the iPhone and iPhone Pro lineup. Expect to see the iPhone 18 series early next year.

Of course, we can’t talk about what to expect without mentioning the upcoming iPhone foldable. Likely going to launch as either the iPhone Ultra or iPhone Fold, it will likely be the most expensive iPhone ever too; expect to see starting prices around the RM9,000 mark or higher. This would also be the first major design change in the iPhone’s history since 2017’s iPhone X and its full screen display.

While we’ll all have to wait till the actual Apple Event comes about to know what exactly the iPhone Ultra will offer, previous leaks have indicated that it will get a 5.5-inch outer display, which unfolds to reveal a wide-body 7.8-inch main display. It’ll also likely have an A20 Pro under the hood, with a 5,000mAh battery keeping the lights on. Just like the Galaxy Z Fold 8, the iPhone Ultra is expected to come with a dual rear camera setup too, while Touch ID makes a return here.
