No – that black dot at the top of your iPhone is not a bug

Have you noticed a black dot on your iPhone screen, right next to your Dynamic Island? That’s a glitch! Kidding, but a bug was what many iPhone users thought it was, enough to warrant a new topic on the r/iphone subreddit.

The mystery of the black dot has been uncovered, and as it turns out, it’s just the Privacy Indicator Dot that was repositioned after the iOS 18.4 update. For those unfamiliar, the Privacy Indicator Dot turns green to let users know when the camera is in use by an app, and orange when the microphone is active.

This isn’t a new feature, but the dot was previously located inside the Dynamic Island, and so was concealed until it was lit. However, as confirmed by MacRumors, Apple has changed it so that when there’s activity inside the Dynamic Island, the privacy indicator moves to the side- which is why you now see an awkward black dot next to the island.
It’s unclear if this is temporary or if Apple will relocate the Privacy Indicator Dot in the upcoming iOS 18.5 update.
