Best Open-Ear Headphones for Runners in Malaysia

By Timothy Teoh January 24, 2025

If you’re serious about running, it’s high time you realized – open-ear headphones are the way to go. You might have your reservations at first, given their oddly shaped and unconventional form factor (some might even say they look like hearing aids). But trust us, once you put them on, your running experience will elevate to new heights.

Open-ear headphones were made for runners who fuel their runs with music. Runners who are constantly pushing their limits and need a boost in the form of pumped-up bass. And yes, while your standard true wireless buds can provide that, open-ear headphones maintain the invaluable quality of spatial awareness while delivering top-quality audio…if you know which ones to choose.

Open-ear headphones are on the rise, and if you’re finally ready to embrace them, here are the best open-ear headphones for runners in Malaysia.

    1) JBL Soundgear Sense; RM999

When it comes to audio wearables, you can count on JBL to come up with the goods. The stubby earpiece may give the impression of bulkiness, but it’s all housed in a well-designed capsule casing that keeps it fairly pocketable.

As for the hooks, these are designed to rest comfortably on the curve of your ears without obstructing the ear canal, allowing you to stay aware of your surroundings. Before you worry about sound leakage, JBL’s OpenSound Technology minimizes sound dispersion, ensuring your calls and music stay private.

One of the great things about the JBL Soundgear Sense is its detachable neckband, which helps keep the headphones snug around your head. Additionally, they offer up to 6 hours of playback on a single charge, and up to 24 hours with the charging case. An IP54 dust- and splash-proof rating keeps the headphones protected against rain and hard-earned sweat.

    Pros

    • 16.2mm drivers
    • Comes with neckband
    • IP54 dust and splash proof
    • Decent battery

    Cons

    • Heavy earpiece (13.1g per bud)
    • Pricey

    2) HUAWEI FreeClip; RM899

The HUAWEI FreeClip might resemble typical in-ear true wireless earbuds, but it’s an open-ear headphone at its core. Its hooks are visibly unique. Instead of an elongated, flexible hook, it utilizes what HUAWEI calls the C-bridge design, which allows it to clip sideways around the ear, almost like earrings.

It’s compact, not as attention-grabbing, and probably the best option if you want a low-key open-ear experience. Not only that, but because it lacks earhooks, each bud weighs just 5.6g, making them the lightest on this list.

For its size, the HUAWEI FreeClip gives you decent mileage with 8 hours of music on a single charge, and up to 36 hours with the charging case. It is also IP54-rated for sweat and water resistance, making it a great option for workouts.

    Pros

    • Lightweight (5.6g per bud)
    • Minimalist design
    • IP54 sweat and water resistance

    Cons

    • Pricey
    • C-bridge is not adjustable

    3) soundcore AeroFit Pro; RM879

The soundcore AeroFit Pro’s earhooks might look too robust for one’s liking, but they’re that way for a good reason. Their thickness helps anchor the earpiece firmly in place, minimizing shimmies when you’re pushing through your HIIT workouts. It’s one less thing to worry about when you’re gasping for air during your burpees.

Like the JBL offering, the AeroFit Pro also comes with an adjustable neckband that snaps on easily.

Audio quality is undoubtedly premium, with 16.2mm drivers and support for the LDAC codec, delivering an enhanced audio experience. But that’s not even the cherry on top. The AeroFit Pro will power you through marathons with up to 14 hours of runtime – and that’s on a single charge. With the charging case, expect a total of 46 hours of playback to accompany you.

Topping it all off is the headphones’ IPX5 water resistance reinforced by soundcore’s SweatGuard technology to keep liquids at bay.

Read our comparison review of the soundcore AeroFit Pro here!

    Pros

    • Excellent battery
    • Comes with neckband
    • 16.2mm drivers and LDAC support
    • IPX5 water-resistant and SweatGuard Technology

    Cons

    • Heavy earpiece (12.23 per bud)
    • Pricey

    4) Shokz OpenFit Air; RM599

You can’t have a “best open-ear headphones” list without the trendsetters themselves, can you? Shokz (formerly AfterShokz) has been driving the open-ear wearable concept forward with its niche line of bone conduction headphones designed for athletes.

With open-ear headphones now in trend, the brand has seamlessly established itself as the go-to source for runners, which is why we’re recommending the Shokz OpenFit Air. The OpenFit Air is arguably the best entry-level open-ear option with a well-balanced mix of comfort and quality, all at a reasonable price.

Shokz places plenty of emphasis on comfort, and that’s reflected in the OpenFit Air’s flexible memory alloy hooks. Perhaps the most impressive feat is keeping each earpiece at just 8.7g, making them one of the lightest open-ear headphones available.

Despite this, it still manages up to 6 hours of runtime on a single charge, totaling 28 hours with the charging case.

    Pros

    • Extremely light (8.7g per bud)
    • Flexible alloy hooks
    • IP54 sweat and water-resistant
    • Decent battery

    Cons

    • No adjustable neckband
    • Non-premium audio

    5) Sony Float Run; RM599

Of all the open-ear headphones we’ve recommended, the Sony Float Run has the most unique shape. For starters, its earpieces sport a rigid V-shaped design. Unlike most other open-ear models, it doesn’t have flexible hooks. Instead, it comes with a permanently attached neckband that is just as pliable, accommodating various head sizes and hairstyles.

The earpiece is designed to sit slightly off your ears, preventing chafing while allowing ambient sounds to come through. Meanwhile, a 16mm driver ensures crisp audio throughout your runs.

Though there’s no charging case, the Sony Float Run makes up for it with up to 10 hours of runtime on a single charge, making it one of the better options for battery endurance.

    Pros

    • Thoughtful design
    • Decent battery
    • IPX4 rating

    Cons

    • No charging case

    6) Xiaomi OpenWear Stereo; RM599

In light of the open-ear trend, Xiaomi too has thrown in its contender by introducing the OpenWear Stereo. It’s the brand’s first attempt at open-ear headphones, and honestly, it’s deserving of its merits.

It sports a sleek profile – particularly at the mid-section of the hooks – making it eyewear-friendly. The alloy hooks are flexible enough to adjust, yet snug enough to stay in place. It’s not quite as light as the Shokz open-ear models, but at 9.6g, the Xiaomi OpenWear Stereo is an easy recommendation for those seeking a lightweight option.

It also clocks in a decent shift with up to 7.6 hours of runtime, totaling 38.5 hours with the case. Additionally, the LHDC codec support and Hi-Res certification are worth a mention. For a new kid on the open-ear block, the OpenWear Stereo ticks the boxes as a well-rounded choice.

    7) soundcore V30i; RM299

The second soundcore offering sits at the opposite end of the price spectrum compared to the premium AeroFit Pro. The soundcore V30i gets our vote as the best value-for-money purchase on the market.

We’ll be the first to acknowledge that its sound quality isn’t on the premium side. That aside, these open-ear headphones offer plenty of commendable qualities for their price.

The ear hooks slip comfortably around the ears, and the skin-friendly TPU material is soft to the touch. While the earpieces may look stocky and thick, they weigh only 9.4g per bud, and you’ll hardly feel a thing when you’re out on your runs.

But that’s not why it’s on this list. The ultimate selling point of the soundcore V30i is its impressive 12-hour runtime on a single charge, outlasting even the expensive competitors. With the charging case, you can expect a total of 36 hours of non-stop listening.

    Pros

    • Excellent battery
    • Lightweight (9.4g per bud)
    • IPX5 water resistance and SweatGuard Technology

    Cons

    • Non-premium audio
