ASUS ROG Phone 8 Series launches in Malaysia; Price starts RM3,999

January 30, 2024

After its official unveiling at CES2024, ASUS has finally launched the hotly anticipated ROG Phone 8 Series in Malaysia. For now, the gaming lineup for this year consists of the base variant ROG Phone 8, and the upscaled ROG Phone 8 Pro.

The official retail price of the ROG Phone 8 Series are as listed below:

  • ROG Phone 8 (12GB+256GB) – RM3,999
  • ROG Phone 8 Pro (16GB+512GB) – RM4,799

Additionally, there will be a limited edition Pro Edition, which is basically just the ROG Phone 8 Pro with bigger RAM and storage space, inclusive of an AeroActive Cooler.

  • ROG Phone 8 Pro Edition (24GB+1TB) – RM5,999

The ROG Phone 8 Series is available for purchase in Malaysia starting today. There will be an early bird promo, where all purchases of the ROG Phone 8 will come with an AeroActive Cooler X (worth RM349); purchases for the ROG Phone 8 Pro will come with a DEVILCASE Guardian Gaming phone case (worth RM149); while purchases for the limited edition Pro version will come with an AeroActive Cooler Pro Edition. Inclusive of their respective freebies is a 1-year extended warranty.

As exhibited at CES2024, the new line of ROG phones will feature a facelift, donning a more simplistic design as compared to the sporty designs of yesteryears. The ROG Phone 8 and 8 Pro have seemingly cleaner back panels now, the only pattern being a subtle diagonal line slicing across the panels. It is also 15% thinner as compared to last year’s ROG Phone 7. The base ROG Phone 8 sports dual-toned colours coming in Storm Gray and Phantom Black, while the Pro variant comes in a singular Phantom Black choice.

However, turn the device on and you’ll see the ROG logo burst to life right there on the back panels. ASUS has maintained the Aura RGB lighting on the ROG Phone 8, so you’ll still get the iconic ROG logo in all its flashy colours.

As for the ROG Phone 8 Pro, ASUS has integrated instead an Anime Vision Mini-LED display, which is a 341-element display that users can customize via presets or their own user-generated animations. Besides that, the mini-LEDs can also display time, battery percentage, notifications, and even camera countdown.

In regards to performance, the ROG Phone 8 Series will utilize the latest Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor. This is paired with LPDDR5X RAM and UFS 4.0 storage in all its memory configurations.

Both models sport a 6.78″ LTPO AMOLED display, with adaptive refresh rates that maxes at 165Hz, along with 720Hz touch sampling rates. Peak brightness reaches 2,500nits.

There’s also a change in camera modules, with the ROG Phone 8 Series now having a squarish 5-sided module instead of the usual vertical module. You’ll have a 50MP main camera with OIS, backed by the Sony IMX890 sensor; this is flanked by a 32MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom and OIS, and a 13MP ultrawide lens. At the front is a 32MP front camera.

Powering the ROG 8 Series is a 5,500mAh battery, with 65 wired charging and 15W wireless charging. Both devices are IP68-rated for dust and water resistance. On both ends of the side rails, you’ll still have the AirTriggers for additional controls. One thing they’ve done away with is the AeroActive Portal, which on the ROG 7 opened up a direct pathway for the AeroActive Cooler to reach. Don’t worry, the AeroActive Cooler – now called the AeroActive Cooler X – is still compatible, albeit in an upgraded and more compact format.
