PlayStation 5 gets a facelift: Now with smaller form factor and attachable Disc Drive
Sony has announced a compact new look to the PlayStation 5 consoles which will hit the market sometime in November this year. The new facelift sees a reduction in volume by more than 30%, as well as a weight decrease by up to 24% depending on the model you choose.
On that, you will still have two models to choose from: the PlayStation 5 which supports both disc and digital games; or the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition, which only supports digital downloads.
However, Sony has made it such that the new version of the PlayStation 5 Digital Edition can support an attachable Ultra HD Blue-ray Disc Drive to support disc games, though the disc drive will be sold separately at USD79.99 (~MYR378.08). Just FYI, it is still cheaper to get the PlayStation 5 with both disc and digital support from the get-go, than purchase the Digital Edition with an add-on disc drive.
The new PlayStation 5 will be available in the US market starting November this year, after which a global rollout will ensue. The price for the new PlayStation in USD are as such:
- PlayStation 5 with Ultra HD Blu-ray Disc Drive; $499.99 (~MYR2363.25)
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition; $449.99 (~MYR2126.92)
A horizontal stand will be included in your purchase. Vertical stands on the other hand are sold separately at $29.99 (~MYR141.75)
The new PlayStation 5 will eventually replace the current PlayStation 5 permanently, which all but confirms an end to the old, larger PlayStation 5.
Console covers for the new PlayStation 5 consoles will be available early 2024.
