OnePlus set to exit US and Europe this week, Malaysia and rest of the world by 2027

OnePlus could soon be a thing of the past, at least if you don’t live in mainland China. The smartphone brand is allegedly set to exit the US and Europe as early as this week, with the withdrawal eventually expanding to Malaysia and the rest of the world by 2027.

According to a report by Bloomberg, the move is part of a wider restructuring at OnePlus’ parent company, Guangdong Oppo Mobile Telecommunications Corporation Ltd, better known as Oppo. Citing a person familiar with the matter, it claims OnePlus will start ceasing operations in the US and Europe as early as this week.

The global wind-down is said to continue over the next two years, with the remaining overseas markets, including Malaysia and India, expected to follow sometime in 2027. OnePlus however will remain active in China.

It seems that the restructuring is driven by financial challenges within Oppo’s smartphone business, as well as weak times for OnePlus in key overseas markets, namely the US, Europe and India. Then there’s also the issue of geopolitical concerns surrounding Chinese smartphone brands in the US, together with an ongoing trade secrets lawsuit involving Apple, as factors behind the reported decision.

For many Android enthusiasts, OnePlus was once synonymous with the ‘flagship killer’. The brand built its reputation by offering premium hardware, clean software and fast performance at prices that undercut flagship devices from larger competitors. Its early smartphones quickly gained a loyal fanbase, including in Malaysia, where OnePlus devices were initially sold through invite-only.

However, it’s not been a good year for any of the Chinese smartphone manufacturers so far. The component crunch has seen everyone from parent company Oppo and cousin Vivo to even rivals Xiaomi being forced to slash their targets for the year.

If the report turns out to be accurate, the move would mark the end of OnePlus as a global smartphone brand after more than a decade in international markets. That said, there appears to be no immediate impact Malaysians for now, as the reported global withdrawal is only expected to reach the rest of the world, including us, sometime in 2027. OnePlus Malaysia themselves have so far not confirmed any exit just yet either, so we’ll have to wait and see if they do announce any major changes.
