Does the GoPro Hero10 live up to its hype?

September 22, 2021

GoPro recently launched its latest GoPro Hero10. While it does not offer any ground-breaking new technology, it is a much needed upgrade the GoPro fans and community needed.

The GoPro Hero10’s introductory price is US$50 more expensive than the Hero9 at launch. It has been announced that the GoPro Hero10 will start at RM2,399 and will be available sometime this week or the week after.

What’s New?

While there aren’t many new features, the GoPro Hero10 sure offers a huge leap in performance thanks to its latest GP2 processor.

The introduction of the GP2 processor is indeed a timely one, as the GP1 processor that powers the Hero6 to Hero9 models, is now a relatively old processor that was launched back in 2017.

The GP2 boasts double the performance of the GP1 processor and is evident in all of the following areas:

  • Doubled Video Frame Rates: 5.3K60, 4K120, 2.7K240
  • Improved Rear Touch Panel Responsiveness
  • Improved Front Display Frame Rate that Matches Recording Frame Rate
  • Upgraded Stability with HyperSmooth 4.0
  • Increased 23MP Photo and 19.6 Video Stills

The improvements to the video frame rates alone is enough to justify an upgrade. But in our experience, the improvements in touch panel responsiveness and front-facing display was equally needed.

Other Highlights

HyperSmooth 4.0

As seen in the video demonstration above, the HyperSmooth 4.0 performance is significantly improved. While slight post edits were still required with the Hero9 to achieve better smoothness, shots from the Hero10 looks fantastic with no post-edits.

This improvement will definitely allow GoPro to pull ahead of its competitors as it continues to excel in shooting action shots under extreme conditions.

Additionally, the HyperSmooth 4.0 now also supports livestreaming in 1080p and has an increased 45° Horizon Leveling Tilt Limit in 4K60, 2.7K120 and 1080p120 video.

Hydrophobic Lens Coating

The new lenses that comes with the Hero10 is now coated with a layer of hydrophobic coating. This ensures your lens is free from water droplets at all time which may interfere with your shooting.

No longer do users need to find DIY solutions to repelling water droplets. With that said, these new lenses are also compatible with the Hero9.

In other words, if you are not looking for an upgrade, you can still consider replacing just the lens for your Hero9.

Wired File Transfer

Yes! You can now transfer files faster and more reliably with a USB C cable. No longer do you need to depend on a wireless connection to transfer huge files across to your phone or laptop.

It is worth noting that this feature is also now possible on the Hero9.

Final Thoughts

In short, yes! We do think that the GoPro Hero10 lives up to its hype and delivers real value to its users. We’d definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a dependable action cam.
