ASUS is a Prime Example of How The Tech Industry Can Be Sustainable Too

June 6, 2023

In an era of growing environmental concerns, ASUS is one tech giant taking the initiative to be sustainable. They are perhaps the most active in the industry when it comes to championing a greener future, even releasing detailed Sustainability Reports publicly.

Their commitment is exemplified constantly through their laptops. The most recent being the ASUS Zenbook S 13 OLED which incorporates recycled materials in various sections of its built. This, together with its 100% recyclable packaging makes it “the most eco-friendly Zenbook ever,” according to ASUS.

Even with that, ASUS has only brushed the top layer of their long-term sustainability plan. In years to come, we will see the global tech giant strike the balance between state-of-the-art and green solutions.

Through careful and purposeful strategizing, they already have the roadmap ahead of them.

1) ASUS 2025 Sustainability Goals

ASUS has already laid out the groundwork that will shift them towards a greener future. Based on their 2025 Sustainability Goals, ASUS will touch on four cornerstone points.

Circular Economy

To be an eco-friendly brand, you must have eco-friendly products. ASUS have already taken its first steps by launching the Zenbook S 13 OLED, along with several other carbon-neutral laptops (which we’ll touch on later).

To achieve their vision of a Circular Economy, ASUS is committed towards ensuring sustainable procurement and increasing the use of environmentally friendly materials by 100%.

Responsible Manufacturing

ASUS acknowledges the need to work with business partners that share the same vision. As such, they will work with key suppliers that are qualified and responsible in sourcing their materials.

Additionally, ASUS will oversee that its partners comply with environmental, labour, and human-rights responsibility all throughout its supply chain.

Climate Action

Beyond product manufacturing, ASUS aims to see that its operations eventually reach net-zero emissions. There are plans already to achieve 100% renewable energy in Taiwan-based operations by 2030.

By 2035, ASUS hopes to apply the same 100% renewable energy shift to global operation centres.

Value Creation

In their course of action, ASUS will also look towards cultivating talents via cooperative projects with the intention of developing new technologies, new opportunities, and new talents that will benefit the community.

2) FSC-Certified and EPEAT-labelled. But what does it all mean?

FSC and EPEAT are ecolabels that certify if a product is deemed sustainable or not. These certifications are evidence that a product has gone through stringent inspection and have successfully met the criteria needed to earn the certification.

There are a few globally recognized ecolabels which ASUS has had the honor of achieving in their laptops, most notably FSC and EPEAT.

Founded in 1993, the FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) is an international non-profit organization that endorses responsible management of forests. FSC-certified products are indication that the materials needed to built the product are sourced responsibly.

EPEAT on the other hand is a globally recognized ecolabel that measures how a product effects the environment. A product that is EPEAT-labelled means that it has met the environmental performance criteria that deems it sustainable.

You can view ASUS’ list of product that are EPEAT-labelled on their registry.

3) Eco-friendly and Carbon-neutral Laptops

Leading the charge towards their green vision is ASUS’ range of Business laptops.

From its manufacturing process right down to consumer usage, the ExpertBook series are compliant to healthy environmental standards. A solid testament to this is the ExpertBook B9 (B9400), which is the world’s first carbon-neutral business laptop. Additionally, it has also attained FSC-certification and rated EPEAT Gold.

Aside from the B9400, the ExpertBook B9 (B9450) and the upcoming ExpertBook B9 OLED (B9403) will further stamp ASUS’ commitment towards eco-friendly products.

More than just a tech brand

What ASUS is doing goes beyond filling a Corporate Social Responsibility quota. Their push towards a green future should be a benchmark for other tech brands to follow suit.

It is particularly needed in current times, where environmental issues such as climate change and landfill overflow becomes a growing problem.

ASUS’ current initiatives could be one that revolutionizes the tech industry in a way that makes it both state-of-the-art and sustainable.
