Spotify will now explicitly label AI generated artists on its platform

Spotify is introducing an ‘AI Persona’ badge to clearly identify artist profiles that appear to represent AI-generated people.

The badge will start appearing from mid-September on artist profiles, in Search and alongside tracks in playlists. Tapping the badge will show whether the artist disclosed themselves as an AI Persona or whether Spotify identified the profile through its own review.

Artists can voluntarily declare their AI Persona status through Spotify for Artists, but Spotify says it won’t rely on self-disclosure alone. It will also review profiles where the artist’s public identity, including their name and imagery, appears to represent a photorealistic AI-generated person.

Artists flagged by Spotify will be notified and can either disclose their AI status or appeal the decision. Spotify also plans to let listeners report suspected AI Persona profiles in the coming months.

On top of that, Spotify says the badge is specifically about the artist’s identity, not how their music was made. For instance, a real musician who uses AI to help create a song will not automatically be labelled an AI Persona. Spotify also already offers AI Credits, which let artists disclose how AI was used in making a track.

AI Personas will be excluded from Spotify’s editorial and algorithmic recommendations by default too. Users can still search for and listen to these artists, and can receive their music in recommendations if they choose to follow them.

The new label is part of Spotify’s wider effort to provide more transparency around artists and AI. The company has also introduced Verified by Spotify, SongDNA, Artist Details and Artist Profile Protection.

With AI-generated musicians becoming more common, Spotify says the new badge is intended to make it clearer whether the person behind an artist profile actually exists.
