PDRM identifies deepfake videos of PM Anwar Ibrahim used in investment scams

As reported by Bernama, the Royal Malaysia Police (PDRM) has identified five deepfake videos of high-profile politicians being used to trick unsuspecting victims into an investment scam.
This includes manipulated videos of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and Seputeh MP Teresa Kok. The videos are believed to have been altered using artificial intelligence and have been widely circulated on social media since last year.
The use of artificial intelligence in scam tactics has surged in recent years, driven by the rapid advancement of AI technology.
Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Seri Ramli Mohamed Yoosuf said, “The videos portray these figures inviting the public to join investment schemes allegedly endorsed by the Malaysian government, promising returns of up to 100 times.”
“Although promoted on various platforms, it is believed they were produced by the same syndicate to mislead victims,” he told Bernama.

Beyond the local scene, altered videos of global figures have also been used in the fake investment scheme, including U.S. President Donald Trump and Tesla CEO Elon Musk.
According to the Securities Commission Malaysia (SC), these postings are usually accompanied by a “Learn More” button or link that directs victims to a registration page to collect personal information.
“Unsuspecting individuals who access the link will also be asked to download an application, which could expose them to cybercrime risks,” said the SC.
To curb the rise of online scams, the Securities Commission Malaysia is collaborating with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to remove deepfake videos promoting fraudulent investments.
