Malaysian students can claim 12 months of Google AI Plus for free, here’s how
Google has rolled out a new back-to-school offer that gives eligible students a full year of its Google AI Plus plan free of charge. The promotion is available in more than 140 markets, including Malaysia, and can be claimed until 31 December 2026.
The plan normally costs RM23.99 a month locally, putting the value of the free year at around RM290. Students will get twice the usage limits available to free Gemini users, along with access to Gemini Omni, Deep Research, additional tools in Gemini’s study notebooks, and 400GB of cloud storage shared across Drive, Gmail and Photos.
Beyond the subscription itself, Google has also rolled out a set of new study tools that any Gemini user can tap into. There’s a dedicated student hub, along with study notebooks that turn your uploaded lecture notes into a step-by-step gameplan complete with diagnostic quizzes and a progress dashboard. On top of that, there are interactive 3D visualisations for topics that are easier to grasp visually, and Deep Research now runs inside Gemini Live so you can talk through a research report hands-free.
To actually claim it, you’ll need to be an enrolled student at an eligible institution and verify that through Google’s sign-up flow, using a personal Google account rather than a school-issued one. Do note that a valid payment method is required upfront, and the whole offer needs to be redeemed by 31 December 2026.
Just keep in mind that the subscription will automatically renew once the 12-month free period ends. After that, you’ll be charged the standard RM23.99 monthly fee unless you cancel beforehand, so it may be worth setting a reminder if you only plan to use it during the free period.
On top of the free plan, students who need more can opt for Google AI Pro at RM23.99 per month, a 75% discount from the usual RM97.99, for up to four years. The package includes 5TB of storage, more access to Gemini’s advanced features, support for research and coding, and YouTube Premium Lite at no additional cost.
Overall, this is a good opportunity for students to explore Gemini’s premium features without having to pay for the first year. The offer also comes at a time when major AI companies are increasingly targeting students with their own education-focused plans and promotions.
