Insta360 Luna Ultra: 8K gimbal camera with dual Leica lenses, from RM2,999

Insta360 has announced the Luna Ultra, its first Leica co-engineered gimbal camera that combines a dual-lens camera system, 3-axis stabilisation and AI-powered tracking features in a compact form factor.

Positioned as a premium option for content creators and mobile filmmakers, the Luna Ultra features a 1-inch sensor paired with a Leica Summicron lens capable of recording up to 8K at 30fps. It is joined by a secondary telephoto camera that uses a 1/1.3-inch sensor with an f/2.0 aperture, offering five focal lengths and up to 12x zoom, including 6x lossless zoom.

As for video, on top of the 8K30 recording the camera also supports Dolby Vision and 10-bit I-Log capture, while Insta360 claims up to 14 stops of dynamic range. On the photography side, users can capture 37MP still images as well as 200MP panoramic shots.

Low-light performance is assisted by Insta360’s PureVideo mode, which is said to reduce noise and improve brightness and detail at resolutions up to 4K 60fps. The company has also equipped the Luna Ultra with a Triple AI Chip system for image processing and AI-powered features.

Perhaps the strangest and coolest features on the Luna Ultra though is the detachable 2-inch OLED touchscreen, which can be used as a remote monitor and controller with a wireless range of up to 20 metres. This allows users to frame shots remotely, which could be useful for solo creators.

The Luna Ultra weighs just over 200g and is powered by a 1,550mAh battery that offers up to four hours of runtime. It supports fast charging, reaching 80% in around 23 minutes. Storage consists of 47GB of built-in space, with support for microSD cards up to 1TB.

For stabilisation, the camera combines a mechanical 3-axis gimbal with electronic image stabilisation. Subject tracking is handled by Insta360’s Deep Track 5.0 system, which includes features such as Auto Tracking, Active Zoom Tracking, Group Tracking and Smart Framing. On top of that, its partnership with Leica also means you get Leica’s signature colour profiles, such as Leica Natural, Leica Vivid and Leica Chrome.

The Insta360 Luna Ultra is now available for pre-order from their official stores on Shopee and Lazada with a starting price of RM2,999 for their standard bundle, which comes with the Luna Ultra itself, a protective cover, a wind guard, a 1/4″ thread handle and a wrist strap. For RM3,129, you can also get the Light Creator Bundle, which adds a carry bag and black mist filter. Lastly, for RM3,699 there’s the Creator Bundle, which loses the filter but adds a battery handle, Mic Pro transmitter and a wide-angle lens.
