Fahmi: No update yet on who is Malaysia’s official World Cup 2026 broadcaster

The FIFA World Cup is set to kick off in June, but Malaysians are still in limbo as to whether or not we’ll be able to watch it. That’s because at time of writing, there’s still no Malaysian broadcaster that has secured the rights to it.

Communications Minister Datuk Fahmi Fadzil has also confirmed that there’s still no update regarding the situation. Fahmi stated that the Cabinet has yet to discuss the situation either, adding that the issue has not been raised so far internally.

With no broadcaster confirmed to the rights of the World Cup, many football fans are now wondering if we may not experience the World Cup live. Astro has broadcast the World Cup since 2006, but the broadcaster has not announced if they will be showing the matches or not.

The issue appears to be down to FIFA’s hefty fee of roughly USD50 million (RM198.5 million), with broadcasters not willing to pay the high fees. We’re not the only ones in limbo either, as India has no one snagging up the World Cup 2026 broadcasting rights, even as FIFA reportedly offered to bundle in the 2030 tournament for a combined fee of just USD35 million.

Singaporeans across the strait however already have full coverage confirmed via Mediacorp, with Singapore fans only having to fork out as low as SGD98 (RM305.19) to watch all 104 matches via an app.
