Emirates A380 now has Starlink WiFi with up to 2Gbps speeds, free for all passengers

Emirates has announced that its flagship Airbus A380 is now equipped with next-generation onboard WiFi powered by Starlink. The airline says the upgrade delivers speeds of up to 2Gbps across the aircraft, which is a pretty big jump from the free in-flight WiFi you might’ve previously experienced.

The first A380 equipped with the new Starlink system has already returned to Dubai following installation and certification works carried out in Newquay, UK. With more aircraft scheduled for upgrades throughout 2026, passengers can expect faster and more reliable internet connectivity on long-haul flights in the near future.

According to Emirates, its earlier generation inflight internet delivered less than 1Mbps of total bandwidth per aircraft. With the new Starlink setup, the airline has installed three antennas on each A380, boosting available bandwidth by roughly a thousand-fold. This allows passengers to stream videos, browse the web, play games and work from their personal devices while cruising at 40,000 feet.

Unlike many current inflight internet services, Emirates says the high-speed connection will be complimentary for all passengers, regardless of cabin class. Future enhancements are also planned, including live TV streaming via Starlink, initially on personal devices before eventually expanding to seatback entertainment screens.

The Airbus A380, as the world’s largest passenger plane, presents unique engineering challenges due to its double-decker layout and high passenger capacity. Emirates says the Starlink configuration for the A380 is an industry-first design that can deliver more than 2Gbps of total aircraft bandwidth across the cabin. Compared to its Boeing 777-300ER fleet, the A380 setup includes additional wireless access points and an extra antenna to ensure consistent connectivity across both decks.

The Starlink rollout is part of Emirates’ broader investment into upgrading its passenger experience. The airline says it has refurbished 93 aircraft to date, introducing new Premium Economy cabins, refreshed Business Class seats, improved First Class suites and upgraded interiors across Economy Class. As for Starlink, 25 of their Boeing 777-300ER planes already come with Starlink, with more A380 planes to be equipped with Starlink soon. So far, over 650,000 Emirates passengers have already flown on Starlink-enabled flights.

For Malaysian flyers, this upgrade is particularly relevant as Emirates operates regular A380 flights to Kuala Lumpur. Emirates has served Malaysia since 1996 and currently operates 21 weekly flights between Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) and Dubai using both the Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft. KLIA was also the first airport in Malaysia capable of handling the Airbus A380, with Emirates launching its A380 service to Kuala Lumpur back in 2012.
