Early iPhone Ultra testers seem to love the upcoming Apple foldable

Apple’s first foldable iPhone could be its most exciting new product in years, and early testers apparently like what they’ve seen so far.

According to Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, several people who have tried Apple’s upcoming foldable are impressed by its pocket friendly design, sturdy hinge and iPad-like interface when the device is opened up. Of course, for the rest of us we’ll have to wait till Apple unveils the foldable iPhone Ultra , expected to be around 9 September.

When folded, the device is designed to work like a regular iPhone. Open it up though and you’d be greeted by an interface that should look like a hybrid of iPadOS and iOS, with side-by-side apps and improved multitasking, something that iPhones have generally lagged behind Android. You’ll still get the usual benefits of a larger main display of course, such as better video watching and gaming experience.

That being said, the foldable iPhone is expected to cost more than USD2,000 (around RM8,000), putting it firmly in ultra premium territory. Nevertheless, despite arriving years after the likes of Samsung, Huawei and Google, Apple could still give the foldable market a huge boost by bringing the form factor to millions of iPhone users.

However, there are some compromises to the iPhone Ultra. The foldable iPhone reportedly won’t have a telephoto camera, which could be a dealbreaker for some buyers at this price. It is also expected to use Touch ID instead of Face ID, though those of you old enough to remember the iPhone 8 and before might actually prefer that.

China could be another important market for Apple, as while foldables remain a niche category globally, China accounted for more than half of worldwide foldable shipments in 2025, with over 10 million units sold. A premium foldable iPhone could give Apple a boost in hardware options to compete with aggressive mainland manufacturers such as Huawei and Xiaomi.

Apple may be late to the foldable game, but if these early impressions are anything to go by, we can’t wait to find out what’s in store for us when September rolls around.
