Apple might only launch one M6 chip as focus shifts to the M7 lineup

Apple could be changing its usual Apple silicon strategy, with reports suggesting the company may launch only the base M6 chip before moving its focus to the next generation M7 family.
Traditionally, Apple expands each chip generation with multiple variants, starting with the base chip, followed by Pro, Max and eventually Ultra versions for higher end Macs. However, the company may break that pattern with M6 by skipping the usual M6 Pro, M6 Max and M6 Ultra upgrades.
Instead, Apple is reportedly accelerating development of the M7 lineup, with a stronger focus on artificial intelligence performance. The shift is down to how AI is becoming a major driver of Apple’s chip development. The company has spent years building its own AI hardware, including the Neural Engine that first appeared in the iPhone X and later became a key component of Apple Silicon-powered Macs.

The upcoming M7 family is expected to bring larger AI-focused upgrades, especially with the high end M7 Ultra. The chip is reportedly being designed to deliver a significant jump in AI performance, potentially putting Apple silicon closer to dedicated AI accelerators used for demanding workloads.
Bloomberg suggests that we could be seeing support for up to 1.5TB of memory on the M7 Ultra, though whether or not Apple lets you configure that much remains to be seen, due to the global memory shortage and what not. Products powered by the M7 is expected to arrive by the first half of next year, with the M7 Pro and M7 Max before the end of 2027, while an M7 Ultra will likely debut by 2028.
In fact, Apple is already planning ahead for its M8 family of processors, with most of their attention once again focused on its AI capabilities. This one will be fabbed on a 1.4nm process, which in turn would be another major step in greater efficiency.
