Apple discontinues 256GB Mac Mini, now starts at RM3,349 for 512GB model

If you were looking at getting a new Mac Mini today, you might be surprised to see that Apple no longer offers the RM2,499 base model. The ultracompact desktop computer now starts at RM3,349 with 512GB of storage, RM850 more than what the cheapest Mac Mini used to be just weeks ago.

This comes after outgoing Apple CEO Tim Cook mentioned during an earnings call that the chip shortage is finally starting to hit the Cupertino giant. Cook told shareholders that from June onwards, there will be supply constraints hitting several Mac models, with the Mac Mini and Mac Studio in particular likely needing month to hit the supply-demand balance.
Mind you, you’re still getting a pretty competent desktop computer with the Mac Mini. It still comes with the 10-core M4 processor and 16GB of memory, however at RM3,349 the value proposition of the Mac Mini has definitely dropped in comparison to its previous RM2,499 starting price.
Of course, you can still get a brand new computer from Apple for under RM2,500. The MacBook Neo is still available at RM2,499 for its base model with 256GB of storage, while for RM2,899 you can get the 512GB one with Touch ID too. However, you will be sacrificing that M4 processor for a much more subdued Apple A18 Pro instead, though you do somewhat make up for it by having a complete computer out of the box; no need to find a monitor, keyboard and mouse here.
