Abang Johari: Sarawak to look into hydrogen with diesel prices remaining volatile

By Raymond Saw April 20, 2026

Sarawak looks set to double down on their push towards hydrogen as an alternative energy source. This comes as global diesel prices remain volatile amid geopolitical tensions.

The Premier of Sarawak, Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, was quoted saying that he expects hydrogen production to become more relatively cost competitive compared to diesel. This is down to new developments and advancements in electrolysis technology and membrane efficiency.

“Talking about hydrogen, I have done my homework together with the experts. With today’s diesel prices, the production of hydrogen will be cheaper than diesel; the electrolysis process will be cheaper because of the new membrane in the technology. And diesel… with all the geopolitical tension now, I don’t think it will end within this era,” – Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg

Sarawak has been the leader when it comes to hydrogen adoption in Malaysia of course. They’ve already had a couple of hydrogen buses in Kuching since 2020, and are also testing a Autonomous Rapid Transit system using hydrogen-powered vehicles. Sarawak has multiple hydrogen-production initiatives going on too, such as the H2biscus and H2ornbill projects.

However, hydrogen won’t be the only alternative energy source for Sarawak. Abang Johari added that their rural electrification program in Baram has already swapped out their diesel generators in favour of solar energy systems. Further infrastructure improvements have also been made to reduce reliance on ferry services and thus diesel, such as bridge projects across Sarawak.
