U Mobile has announced that its Ultra 5G network, Malaysia’s second 5G network, has achieved a 90% coverage of populated areas (CoPA) rate, roughly nine months ahead of its original 90% CoPA by July 2027 target schedule.

The orange telco made the announcement at an event officiated by Minister of Communications Dato Seri’ Fahmi Fadzil and Deputy Minister of Communications Teo Nie Ching. U Mobile had just only announced reaching 80% CoPA back in March 2026, which was then 3 months ahead of its own July 2026 target.

For context, U Mobile was awarded the contract to roll out the nation’s second 5G network back in March 2025. They then started the rollout in July that same year, with the goal being 80% CoPA within 12 months and then 90% CoPA by July 2027.

“Achieving 90% nationwide 5G coverage more than nine months ahead of schedule reflects the determination of the entire U Mobile team and the strong collaboration of our government, regulatory, technology and infrastructure partners.

We made a commitment to build a nationwide 5G network at speed and scale, and today, we are proud to have delivered on that promise ahead of schedule,” – Wong Heang Tuck, U Mobile Chief Executive Officer

Wong added that the milestone is more than about reaching the coverage target, but also about bringing connectivity to more Malaysians, making it easier for people to learn, work, communicate and access opportunities. The goal now for U Mobile is to continue strengthening the Ultra 5G experience and helping businesses, communities and public services translate that connectivity into meaningful value.

Beyond just expanding its coverage of populated areas, U Mobile as also been working to increase its in-building coverage sites across Malaysia, with its original goal being 600 buildings within four years. The telco says that it has since surpassed over 250 in-building coverage sites, which means that they’re fairly ahead of schedule to hit their indoor coverage target.
