Tune Talk: Nearly 2 in 3 parents uncertain about their children’s online safety

By Raymond Saw October 21, 2026

Nearly two in three Malaysian parents are uncertain or lack confidence in managing their children’s online safety, according to a survey commissioned by Tune Talk, highlighting the challenges families face in keeping children safe online.

In a survey conducted earlier this year in May throughout June 2026, the survey polled 378 verified Malaysian parents with children under 18. The findings found that 61.9% of respondents were uncertain about their ability to manage their children’s online safety, despite efforts to supervise their internet usage and establish rules at home.

The survey was conducted across several major news portals, including the New Straits Times, Berita Harian and Harian Metro. It also covered households with varying income and education backgrounds, with 59.6% of respondents holding high school or diploma qualifications, while 55.3% reported monthly household incomes below RM5,000.

According to Tune Talk, the findings reflect the practical challenges parents face as children increasingly use the internet to watch videos, play games, browse websites and complete schoolwork. While online access offers opportunities for learning and exploration, it can also expose children to inappropriate content and other digital risks.

On top of that, the survey found that 67.2% of parents rely on rules and supervision to manage their children’s online activities. This highlights the role parents play in guiding their children’s digital experiences, while raising the question of what additional support they may need to navigate online safety.

Beyond restricting access to potentially harmful content, the survey also found that 43.9% of parents want more guidance on developing healthy digital habits for their children.

Practical tools to support children’s online safety are available across various devices, platforms and services. For parents looking to manage their children’s internet access, family mobile plans that incorporate parental controls offer another option to consider.

Among these options, Tune Talk’s Epik+ Family Safe combines network-level content filtering with parental controls that parents can manage through the Tune Talk app. This gives families an additional way to manage access to online content, alongside parental supervision and conversations about healthy digital habits.

Unlike parental controls that need to be configured separately on individual devices, Epik+ Family Safe applies internet filtering at the network level. Parents can choose from three protection levels based on their children’s ages and needs.

High Protection is designed for younger children and applies the strictest restrictions, blocking adult content, social media, dating apps, chat platforms, gambling sites and violent games.

Meanwhile, Medium Protection is intended for early adolescents, allowing access to mainstream social media and messaging apps while continuing to block adult content, weapons-related content, gambling sites, illegal streaming services and malware.

As for Low Protection, it’s aimed at older teenagers who require broader internet access, while maintaining restrictions against serious threats such as explicit content, financial fraud, phishing links and malicious websites.

That being said, network-level filtering of course won’t be able to guarantee protection against every online threat. It works best when combined with parental supervision, open conversations and consistent guidance on responsible internet use.

Tune Talk adds that digital safety should not be about restricting children’s access to the internet entirely, but about helping families build awareness, trust and healthy online habits as children navigate an increasingly connected world.
