5 Tips To Prevent Your Phone From Overheating

By Timothy Teoh June 24, 2023

If you’re an avid smartphone user, you’ve probably tried many tricks to prevent your phone from overheating. Although it’s common for phones to get slightly hot, excessive heat might indicate a more serious problem.

Exposure to direct sunlight and too many active apps are typically the reasons why your phone is overheating. However, malware and misbehaving software can also cause your phone to overheat and pose a threat to your data.

If you want to keep your phone in good shape, here are some handy tips to bear in mind to prevent your phone from overheating.

1. Keep Your Phone Away From Direct Sunlight

Most likely, leaving your phone under the heat for too long is the main factor for the overheating. So, the first step to preventing your phone from overheating is to keep it out of the sun.

The longer you expose your phone to sunlight, the more light and heat it absorbs and retains. Leaving it in the sun might also cause the touchscreen not to work correctly and the battery to deplete faster.

If you must use your phone on a hot day, try keeping it under the shade. After you’re done using it, try putting your phone in a cool spot to let it cool down.

2. Close or Remove Unused Apps and Files

Another approach to prevent your phone from overheating is to close or delete unused apps and files in your phone. It would be best to remove the unnecessary files and apps taking up space in your phone, including your browser tabs that are left open.

Idle apps running in the background will burden your phone’s memory and storage, causing it to heat up. Additionally, downloaded apps that you haven’t used for a long time might also weigh down your phone’s performance and battery.

So, try to regularly check and close unused apps and files on your phone to make it a habit. This will allow you to lessen the memory and storage load and reduce your battery consumption on your phone.

3. Stop Overcharging Your Phone’s Battery

If you want to avoid your phone from overheating, you should charge your phone properly. Always avoid overcharging your phone as it might shorten the battery’s lifespan and cause excessive heat to build up.

However, if you need to charge your phone overnight, keep it charged on a firm and flat surface. If you charge it on your pillow or couch, the heat generated while charging won’t be able to ventilate.

The golden rule of charging your phone is to start charging when the battery falls below 30% and disconnect when it reaches 80%. Many professionals have found that frequently charging your phone to 100% can diminish the battery’s life.

4. Be Wary of Your Connections and Settings

Another useful tip to prevent your phone from overheating is to limit the network-related features in your phone. This refers to the Wi-Fi, hotspot and, more importantly, Bluetooth.

Simultaneously running all of these features could be a little too much for your device to handle. Moreover, using Bluetooth for an extended time might cause your phone to overheat instead of preventing it.

Thus, you should avoid using your phone’s Bluetooth for a long time. One thing to always remember is to make sure you’ve indeed turned off your Bluetooth after using it.

5. Install Antivirus Software (For Android Phones)

Since Android phones are more prone to malware than iPhones, a trustworthy mobile antivirus is a must for Android devices. It protects your smartphone against viruses, dangerous apps, callers, theft, and many other threats to your phone.

Mobile viruses can expose and steal your personal and financial information, track your position, and deplete your battery. After all, virus developers are more interested in your data than the health of your gadget.

However, android mobile spyware and other forms of malware can still cause your phone to overheat by overworking it. If you fear your phone has a virus, you should quickly remove it to prevent your phone from overheating.

If you want to get an antivirus for your device, we recommend subscribing to reputable brands such as Kaspersky, Avast, or McAfee.
