Threads has already surpassed 100 million users. It only took 5 days.

July 10, 2023

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, we’re pretty sure you’ve heard of a rapidly trending app called Threads.

Launched recently on July 6th, Threads is proving itself to be a worthwhile rival of Twitter, with the former bringing in more than 100 million users in just four days since it went live.

To put things into perspective, the fastest growing app prior to Threads was the AI chatbot ChatGPT released earlier this year – and that took 2 months.

Threads is a Meta-owned app, which under its umbrella includes Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The CEO of Meta is of course, Mark Zuckerberg. Twitter, on the other hand, is owned by X Corp, a technology company whose head honcho is Elon Musk.

So beyond Threads vs Twitter, is also Mark Zuckerberg vs Elon Musk.

What’s causing Threads’ rapid influx is still up for debate. Both apps share very similar interfaces, and their concepts are pretty much the same. You can like, reply, repost (equivalent to Twitter’s retweet) and even quote (equivalent to quote tweet) a Thread.

The only thing we can say is that Elon Musk’s decision to charge for Twitter Blue verification didn’t help. Also, the recently implemented rate limit on Twitter – which restricts how many Tweets an account can view per day – could also be a factor.

Whatever the case, Threads’ resemblance to Twitter may have ruffled some feathers over at the Twitter nest, as its been reported that Elon Musk may sue Meta over “misappropriation of Twitter’s trade secrets and other intellectual property.”

Nothing has come to the fore yet, though it would make for an interesting case.

At this stage, we also can’t help to point out that Mark Zuckerberg and Elon Musk have been exchanging not-so-nice words of late, with both somewhat agreeing to “a cage match”.

What do you think? Should Elon and Mark slug it out in an MMA match to claim the title for undisputed tech mogul?
