Sony goes dark on social media as industry mocks its move to end physical discs

By Raymond Saw July 3, 2026

It’s now been nearly been two days since Sony announced its decision to end physical discs for new PlayStation games from January 2028 onwards. Since then, the official PlayStation account has gone dark on X (formerly known as Twitter), with no new posts since it made the announcement.

That’s perhaps unsurprising, as it’s on X that most of the user backlash to their move is happening. The replies on their post currently sit at over 68,000 at time of writing, most of it from angry gamers lamenting the decision and voicing their anger towards Sony. Other PlayStation platforms like on Instagram and YouTube meanwhile are still active, though those are mostly just trailers showcasing new up-and-coming games that third party developers are using for marketing.

In fact, PlayStation is now being mocked by a number of other companies, both in and out of the industry, for their decision to end physical discs. Just take a look at the various satirical posts and statements from others ranging from YouTubers, game developers, and accessory makers to even fast food chains poking fun at Sony’s announcement:

Despite all the backlash, it remains to be seen whether or not Sony will be reversing their decision on ending physical game discs. In fact, rumours suggest that they’ve been planning to move to digital-only for some time now, which likely means that Sony will be trying to ride out the storm for now instead of making a U-turn.
