SoftBank, Grab and Petros team up to explore AI infrastructure in Sarawak

SoftBank Group, Grab and Petroleum Sarawak Berhad (Petros) have signed a framework agreement to explore developing an artificial intelligence (AI) and digital infrastructure platform in Sarawak. The agreement was signed in Kuching on 8 October 2026 by SoftBank chairman and CEO Masayoshi Son, Grab group chairman and CEO Anthony Tan, and PETROS group CEO Dato Janin Girie, in the presence of Sarawak Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Openg.
Under the agreement, the three companies will work together on a roadmap for developing the platform in phases. They’ll also look into opportunities across the wider AI space, including AI computing and services, robotics and other advanced technologies, as well as developing the local workforce and communities.
Each party brings something different to the table. SoftBank will contribute its global technology and AI ecosystem, covering areas such as AI infrastructure, advanced computing, semiconductors and physical AI. Grab, meanwhile, will offer its digital ecosystem in Southeast Asia, its applied AI capabilities as well as its regional network of customers and partners.

As for Petros, the state-owned energy company will handle the energy side of things, including power supply solutions and supporting infrastructure. Petros is also the master developer of the Kuching Low-Carbon Hub, and will help facilitate local engagement and participation in the project.
According to the companies, the partnership is meant to support Sarawak’s goal of becoming a destination for AI infrastructure and high-value technology industries, as well as Malaysia’s ambition to become a regional hub for AI and digital infrastructure. It’s also tied to Sarawak’s target of reaching high-income status by 2030 under its Post COVID-19 Development Strategy (PCDS) 2030, and is expected to support the national digital connectivity initiative, Jendela.
However, the agreement is still at an early stage and does not guarantee that the project will proceed. Details such as the total investment, the location of the infrastructure and the expected completion timeline have yet to be announced. The project remains subject to due diligence, regulatory approvals, financing, and the availability of suitable land and power.
