Samsung Galaxy A27 5G camera showcase: Middling shooters for a midrange smartphone
The Samsung Galaxy A27 5G gives perhaps the most ‘black sheep’ vibes across the Galaxy A lineup. It’s not as impressive as the Galaxy A37 5G or the Galaxy A57 5G, while also not being as cheap and cheerful as the Galaxy A17 5G or the Galaxy A07 5G.
Which perhaps then makes it the most quintessentially midrange smartphone in Samsung’s midrange Galaxy A series. Priced from RM1,399, it sits in a very crowded budget segment that’s very popular among Malaysians.
While it won’t be particularly impressive in any specific category—the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3 is a fairly decent midrange processor, while its 6.7-inch, FHD+ Super AMOLED display will be fine for most—it’s the cameras that got us intrigued the most.
Downgraded cameras, but decent enough shots
And that’s not because Samsung gave it big upgrades or anything. On the contrary, you could argue that it’s actually been downgraded from its predecessors.
The Galaxy A27 5G packs what is essentially the same main camera on the Galaxy A26 5G, and even the same one on the Galaxy A25 5G. It’s a 50MP, f/1.8 main shooter with a 1/2.76″ Samsung ISOCELL JN1 image sensor and optical image stabilisation, offering up to 4K video at 30fps. However, the ultrawide is now a 5MP, f/2.2 shooter, rather than the 8MP, f/2.2 seen on the Galaxy A26 and Galaxy A25. Rounding it off is a 2MP macro, while up front is a 12MP, f/2.2 selfie shooter.
Taking the Galaxy A27 5G for a quick shoot on a day out at the zoo, we found that for the most part, the cameras are pretty much what you’d expect from one of Samsung’s lower end midrangers. That’s not to say that they’re bad or anything, just more of the same as we’ve seen before, perhaps mainly due to the reused main camera.
Overall, based on a quick shoot, we can see that the Galaxy A27 5G offers fairly soft looking shots that will actually turn out quite well if you get good lighting. The colours in particular are decent and for the most part close to really life, while the dynamic range is impressive enough for a shooter on the shower end. The ultrawide, while not worse than its predecessors, isn’t better either, with detail certainly not the best considering the paltry 5MP resolution. Zoom though is perhaps its weakest link, due to the lack of a true telephoto on the Galaxy A27 5G.
Middle of the road cameras for a jack of all trades
For what it’s worth, the Samsung Galaxy A27 5G was designed to be a midrange smartphone that will appeal to users wanting a cheap enough device that does the job. If you really want to focus hard on the cameras at this price point, you’re better off with something like the REDMI Note 15 Pro 5G and its 200MP shooters, though it then loses out on other stuff like the software front as it has an older version of Android out of the box with fewer major OS upgrades.
The Samsung Galaxy A27 5G is at the end of the day a very well rounded device; the cameras aren’t the best in the segment, but nothing about it really is. Then again, it’s also far from the worst cameras compared to its rivals, and once again, nothing about it really is.
