OpenAI’s first hardware product isn’t a computer or phone – it’s a keyboard
When news of Jony Ive joining OpenAI, ChatGPT’s parent company, broke out in May 2025, they talked about the creation of AI native computers, a product line that Ive is familiar with.
But before we got news of the computer, OpenAI launched their first hardware – a keyboard that is built to work with Codex (an OpenAI coding tool) aptly named Codex Micro.
Available now for USD 230 (~RM920) on OpenAI’s supply site, it was designed with keyboard brand Work Louder, to make using Codex easier with macro keys and ‘agents’ within easy reach of the fingers.
Key features of the Codex Micro
Here is the list of smart keys on the Codex Micro to enhance a work session with Codex:
- 1 Joystick
- Used to trigger skills
- Also a fidget toy while waiting for your tasks to complete
- 1 Dial
- Used to adjust reasoning level at the moment to match your work (and also manage the token limits)
- 6 Command keys
- Programmable to match common Codex actions such as ‘Approve’, ‘Branch’, ‘Reject’
- Dictate – speak your prompt and instructions instead of typing
- 6 status keys
- To toggle between different tasks and agents
- RGB backlight to reflect different statuses
- Idle
- Thinking
- Complete
- Needs Input
- Error
The keyboard comes with Codex Icon Keyset with 32 extra keycaps and is compatible with both Mac and Windows platforms and connection is via Bluetooth or a USB-C cable.
Pre-orders are open now and the first batch is expected to ship from 24 July 2026.
