Maxis responds after Khairul Aming’s phone bill details posted on social media

In case you missed it, local internet chef and restaurateur Khairul Aming posted last night on his Threads account that his personal phone number’s billing information has seemingly leaked online.

As revealed by Khairul, a now-deactivated Threads user by the handle qiu_le_fleur had posted that she knew about how the chef had an overdue bill of RM498. The same Threads post also revealed that she knew Khairul typically paid in advance about RM2,000 to his phone bill, and that he had digital purchases worth about RM400. Even before that, the same user had allegedly posted his mySara details, showing that he had not claimed any of his RM100 budget so far.

Unsurprisingly, Khairul Aming wasn’t too pleased with his details being posted in public like that, and called out Maxis on Threads seeking an explanation. Well, Maxis has now responded with a statement of their own:
“We are investigating an incident regarding a customer’s account circulating on social media last night.
All access to customer accounts is fully logged and monitored. Our findings indicate that this is an isolated incident involving an unauthorised action. There is no indication of any broader incident involving other customers. We are reaching out to the customer this morning regarding this matter.
We have identified the individual linked to this incident and are taking immediate action, including legal action.
We sincerely apologise for this incident. We remain deeply committed to data privacy and protection of personal data,” – Maxis, in a Facebook post
It should be noted that there hasn’t been any confirmation yet as to whether the Threads user in question was a Maxis employee or not. Nevertheless, this incident is a reminder that we need to have stricter data protection laws in place, and that companies need to better ensure that customer data cannot simply be shared to or extracted by the staff working on them.
