Malaysians can now apply for MyKad replacement through MyGov Malaysia

MyGov Malaysia now lets you start a MyKad replacement application right from your phone. Introduced by the Ministry of Digital on 20 October, the feature saves you from having to line up at a National Registration Department (JPN) counter just to get the process going.

To get started, download the MyGov Malaysia app or make sure you have the latest version installed, then sign in to your account. From there, go to the Birth & Identity (Kelahiran & Pengenalan Diri) section and select MyKad Replacement. Fill in the required details, upload any supporting documents requested, and submit your application. You can then follow the on-screen instructions to complete the process.

Before you jump in, keep in mind that the app doesn’t accept submissions around the clock. The service follows government working hours, which means you can only apply between 8am and 4:30pm on weekdays, and not on weekends or public holidays.

Not every case can be handled online either. The app supports replacements for lost or damaged cards, faulty chips and chip upgrades, and is open to applicants aged 18 and above who sign in with MyDigital ID. If you’ve lost your MyKad more than once, or need to update your personal details, a visit to the JPN counter is still required.

Even after applying, you’ll still have to drop by a JPN office to pick up your new MyKad and have your fingerprint verified. At JPN’s headquarters in Putrajaya, state JPN offices and branches that can print cards on the spot, it takes roughly 30 minutes. Elsewhere, expect to wait five working days in Peninsular Malaysia and seven working days in Sabah and Sarawak.

So while the MyGov app won’t spare you a trip to JPN altogether, it should at least shorten the time you spend at the counter. And if you’re wondering whether you should swap your card for the new-generation MyKad, there’s no need to rush into replacing yours just yet.
