GoPro Mission 1 series: Compact cinema cameras with up to 8K60 video capture

GoPro, usually known for their action cameras, has announced a new lineup of compact cinema cameras called the Mission 1 series. This new lineup introduces three models: Mission 1 Pro, Mission 1 and Mission 1 Pro ILS.
All three of them are built around a new 50MP 1-inch sensor and GoPro’s latest GP3 processor, with support for 8K video recording and professional-grade features typically found in much larger cinema cameras. They’re aimed at filmmakers, content creators and enthuasiasts seeking cinema-level video from a compact and rugged body.

At the top of the lineup is the Mission 1 Pro, which supports 8K video recording at up to 60fps, 4K at up to 240fps, and ultra-slow-motion 1080p recording at up to 960fps in burst mode. It also supports open gate recording at 8K30 and 4K120, allowing creators to capture the full 4:3 sensor area for easier reframing into multiple aspect ratios during editing.

The more affordable Mission 1 shares most of the same hardware but with reduced video capabilities, including 8K recording limited to 30fps and 4K recording up to 120fps. It still supports 4K120 open gate recording and retains the same 50MP photo capabilities as the flagship.

Meanwhile, the Mission 1 Pro ILS introduces an interchangeable lens system model that supports Micro Four Thirds (MFT) lenses. This makes it compatible with a wide range of existing lenses through adapters, offering significantly more flexibility for cinematic shooting styles such as telephoto, macro and zoom photography. The Pro ILS retains the same sensor and GP3 processor as the flagship Pro model.

All Mission 1 cameras are built around a new 50MP 1-inch sensor with larger pixel sizes designed to improve low-light performance and dynamic range. GoPro claims the sensor can deliver up to 14 stops of dynamic range, helping retain detail in both bright highlights and dark shadows. Combined with the new GP3 processor, the cameras also support 10-bit colour recording, HLG HDR and GP-Log2 profiles for professional colour grading workflows.
As for battery life, GoPro claims that the Mission 1 series can record for more than five hours at 1080p30 or over three hours at 4K30 on a single charge. The cameras are also designed to handle extended recording sessions without overheating, thanks to the power-efficient GP3 processor built on a 5nm architecture.
Other features of note include a larger OLED rear display, a redesigned button layout for easier operation with gloves, a wide-angle lens, water resistance up to depths of 20m and upgraded audio via four built-in microphone arrays.

Alongside the cameras, GoPro is launching a new ecosystem of accessories designed for professional workflows. These include a redesigned Media Mod with additional I/O ports, a wireless microphone system, upgraded Volta 2 battery grips, ND filters, lighting accessories and protective housings rated for deeper underwater use.
GoPro has not announced the pricing of the Mission 1 series just yet, but have confirmed that they will be available for pre-order beginning 21 May, with global on-shelf availability starting on 28 May. You can sign up on the GoPro website now to be notified once they become available.
