Google’s gradient icon design is heading to more apps

Last year, Google announced that they were updating the logos of their products across all platforms. It started off with Google Search, then Google themselves, followed by Photos, Maps and even the Gemini spark icon got updated with this new gradient look.
And now, it seems that the big G is finally set to introduce the gradient design to the Google Workspace suite. In a report by 9to5Google, they’ve showcased what is allegedly the upcoming lineup of Google Workspace app icons, each of which now carry that same gradient look seen in the new Google ‘G’ logo.

This change seems to be part of Google’s move to better distinguish the look of each app’s icons. Previously, Google was criticised for having similar looking app icons with similar colours across their Workspace suite; Docs Sheets and Slides were all skeuomorphic appropriations of paper, and unless you remembered what colour each app it did look a tad confusing.

Now though, only Docs remains as a vertical sheet of paper, with Sheets and Slides getting their own look. Google Drive also drops the red accent in its old logo, while Meet and Chat drops all colours except yellow and green respectively.

There’s no timeline yet as to when Google will roll out these new app icons, but seeing as they’re already out in the wild it shouldn’t be too long before you start seeing these fresh icons on your phone.
