Google Translate adds background live translation on Android, earpiece playback on iOS

Google Translate is picking up two changes that’ll come in handy the next time you’re abroad, with one rolling out on iOS and the other one on Android. Its live translation feature turns spoken conversations into near real-time audio translations across more than 70 languages, and both updates are aimed at making it easier to use on the go.

The live translation experience itself has been around since last year. Powered by Google’s Gemini models, it works as a two-way conversation helper, playing translations out loud while showing a running transcript on screen in both languages.

For iOS users, the standout change is that live translations can now play through the phone’s earpiece, something Android already offered. So when you’re caught without headphones, you can simply hold the phone up to your ear, which is genuinely handy for picking up announcements at a busy airport or keeping up with a guide on a packed tour.

Android, on the other hand, gets the ability to keep a live translation running in the background. That means you can lock your phone or jump into another app without ending the session with iOS users are set to get the same option down the line.

Neither update is particularly major on its own, but together they make live translate more practical for travel and everyday use. Both are rolling out through the Google Translate app, so make sure yours is updated to access the new features.
