On 8th of June 2021, The Finance Modeling World Cup (FMWC) held its first-ever Excel e-sports competition titled “FMWC 8 Player Battle”.

When you think of e-sports, the first thing that comes to mind is often confined to genres like multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA), first-person shooter (FPS), fighting, card, battle royale, and real-time strategy (RTS).

However, FMWC 8 Player Battle is a unique productivity-based game that challenges participants to solve case study scenarios on Microsoft Excel within a defined timeframe.

The event was hosted live on YouTube with eight financial modellers professionals from worldwide going head-to-head in a nail-biting 40 minutes contest.

The live stream even had its own shoutcasting duo, Adam Callens and Danielle Stein Fairhurst to oversee the event.

As mentioned earlier, Participants were required to solve a a series of financial problem by building a usable financial module within a limited time frame.

We couldn’t be more proud to see a Malaysian representative, Jeff Heng Siang Tan, in the mix of participants. Jeff is currently ranked 10 in the overall world rankings!

The contest came to a close with Michael Jarman from Canada being crowned the champion. Nevertheless, Jeff Heng Siang Tan from Malaysia also put on an outstanding performance tieing the score at fourth place with Gabriala Stroj from Poland.

Final Thoughts

While there is definitely room for improvements in the broadcasting of the event, FMWC is definitely a step in the right direction by bringing such competition into the light of e-sports.

Not only was it entertaining to watch, but it is also highly educational for the viewers or anyone looking to enhance their Excel skillsets.

Furthermore, FMWC makes all its case study materials and solutions available for download. Thus allowing the viewers to further gain from the overall competition as well.

Perhaps this will be the start of a whole new category in the e-sports arena. Indeed exciting, to say the least.
