ChatGPT integration arrives in Microsoft Word, including on the free plan
OpenAI has expanded ChatGPT’s Microsoft 365 integration to Word, letting users access the AI assistant directly while working on a document. Called ChatGPT for Word, it adds a ChatGPT sidebar inside the app, so you can draft, edit and tidy up documents without constantly switching between Word and a browser tab. Better yet, it’s available on every ChatGPT plan, including the free one.
From that sidebar, ChatGPT can handle quite a few of the everyday writing and editing tasks you would normally do manually. Within Word, you can ask ChatGPT to turn your rough notes or source text into a first draft. It can also rewrite a section for a different audience, reorganise your content while adjusting things like headings, numbering and formatting, and check a draft for unclear wording or inconsistent terms.
However, having ChatGPT directly inside Word doesn’t mean it has access to everything on your computer. The assistant primarily works with the document you’ve got open, so it can’t simply pull in other local files, and you’ll need to paste in any extra text you want it to use. Complex tables, charts and fancy formatting may still need manual cleanup. Your regular ChatGPT conversations and memory also don’t carry over to the add-in.
While ChatGPT for Word is available even on the Free plan, there are still usage limits to keep in mind. Word uses token-based pricing tied to the model being used, while your plan’s token limits still apply. On plans with a shared allowance for Codex and other premium features, using ChatGPT heavily in Word can therefore reduce the usage available for those other features.
