Apple Watch Series 9: You can control it, without touching it; From RM1,899

September 13, 2023

The Apple Wanderlust Event saw the launch of the iPhone 15, which we’ve covered briefly in our previous articles (iPhone 15 and 15 Plus, and iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max).

In the same event, Apple also unveiled the latest Apple Watch Series 9 and its many new features now integrated into it.

Let’s take a quick look at what the Apple Watch Series 9 offers.

Apple Watch Series 9 Specs

In releasing the Apple Watch Series 9, Apple has also introduced its first carbon-neutral product. Apple claims to have reduced carbon emissions from three of its biggest sources – materials, electricity, and transportation.

This is a huge milestone in their quest to have all their products carbon-neutral by 2030.

Now onto specs, the main driver of the Series 9 Watches is ultimately the new S9 SiP (System in Package). The powerful new chip – aside from having 30% faster GPU and all-day battery life – brings a whole set of innovative features and improvements.

One such improvement being Double Tap, which allows you to control your Apple Watch without actually touching it.

By simply tapping your index finger and thumb of your watch hand together, you can pick up or end calls, play and pause music, snooze your alarm, scroll through widgets, and plenty more. In essence, it’s like turning the digital crown, except the digital crown is your finger and thumb.

If you’re wondering how it applies to the real world: think of when both your hands are full with heavy groceries and a call comes in. You no longer need to lay them down to tap your watch – you only need to double tap your thumb and index finger together. Or, if your both your hands are dirty and you don’t want to get dirty smudge on your Watch display.

Talking about displays, the Apple Series 9 brightness goes up to 2,000nits. That’s 2x more than last year’s Series 8. Not only that, brightness can now drop to 1nit, so you can avoid that glaring light in dark conditions.

Also, users can integrate your health data into Siri. That way, you can ask Siri questions about your own health, though this will be available only later this year.

Improvements has also been made to Precision Finding, which can now provide distance and direction, with visual, haptic, and audio guidance to a misplaced iPhone.

The Apple Watch Series 9 comes with WatchOS 10, which brings about new Watch faces, improved accuracy and metrics for cycling workout mode, redesigned apps, and much more.
