All the New Features Coming in iOS 27
Apple has officially unveiled iOS 27, marking a massive shift in how users interact with their iPhones through upgraded artificial intelligence, enhanced camera functionality, tighter parental controls and system-wide performance boosts. The official update begins rolling out to supported devices on 15 September.
Siri AI Gets Its Own Standalone App
The headline change in iOS 27 is a ground-up rebuild of Siri, powered directly by Apple Intelligence models. Siri now operates as a true conversational assistant capable of handling open-ended questions and back-and-forth dialogue.
Beyond conversational upgrades, Siri gains deep access to personal context across your device. It can pull up old photos, locate specific emails buried in your inbox, or cross-reference notes to execute complex multi-app tasks.
For the first time, Siri also leaves its overlay-only design to live inside a dedicated Siri app synced via iCloud, allowing you to manage and pin ongoing AI conversations across iPhone and iPad.
Siri Mode in Camera & Generative Photo Editing
Apple is integrating visual search straight into the native camera viewfinder with Siri Mode in Camera. Users can point their iPhone at real-world objects, places, or text to perform instant web searches, translate foreign languages, or extract context on the fly.
The native Photos app receives three major generative editing tools:
- Spatial Reframing: Adjusts the angle and perspective of a photo long after it has been taken.
- Extend Tool: Uses AI to expand the canvas borders of a tightly cropped image.
- Upgraded Clean Up: Offers higher precision when erasing larger background objects or crowd distractions.
Smart Native App Upgrades
Core system applications are getting practical workflow enhancements:
- Safari: Automatically groups open tabs into intelligent topic clusters and introduces Safari Notify Me to alert you when tracked product pages undergo price changes or restocks.
- Call Context: Proactively surfaces relevant documents such as flight confirmation emails or booking codes on-screen while you are active on a phone call.
- Passwords App: Scans for compromised or weak logins and automatically updates them on your behalf.
- Shortcuts: Allows users to build complex cross-app automation routines simply by typing out a plain text description of what they want to achieve.
Expanded Child Safety Controls
Apple has significantly overhauled Screen Time and safety protections for younger users. A new Ask to Browse feature requires children to send web permissions directly to a parent’s Messages app before visiting unfamiliar sites.
Parents also gain age-based Time Allowances and granular Schedules for specific app categories. System-level Communication Safety now actively scans for and blocks sensitive media, including nudity, violence and gore across Messages and FaceTime.

While iOS 27 supports a wide range of older hardware, the full suite of Apple Intelligence and Siri AI capabilities requires advanced Neural Engine processing.
