Xiaomi 17: This compact powerhouse with Leica cameras is now available from just RM3,299

The Xiaomi 17 series is now in Malaysia, and while the headlines may be on the premium Xiaomi 17 Ultra, the smaller Xiaomi 17 is actually a great flagship alternative for those looking for a more compact smartphone, while still retaining Leica-developed cameras and powerful silicon.

The Xiaomi 17 is available for pre-order from now till 5 March on the Xiaomi Malaysia website, their official store on Shopee, Lazada and TikTok Shop as well as Xiaomi stores nationwide.

For those who pre-order the Xiaomi 17, the base model will come with RM200 off, meaning it’s effective just RM3,299, along with a free Xiaomi Sound Party worth RM349. The Xiaomi 17 512GB meanwhile comes with the Sound Party and a free Smart Tower Fan worth RM359 instead. That’s on top of 3-month trial of Google AI Pro, 3-month trial of YouTube Premium and 4-month trial of Spotify Premium.

This compact powerhouse features a 6.3-inch, CrystalRes OLED display, pushing a 2656 x 1220p resolution for a pixel density of 460PPI. It’s capable of an up to 120Hz refresh rate, full coverage of the DCI-P3 colour gamut and a peak brightness of 3500nits. There’s also a layer of Xiaomi Shield Glass over it for scratch resistance.

The body itself meanwhile is built using a ‘micro-curved’ aluminum frame, with a new Golden Arc design for rounded off corners. It also weighs in at just 191g and measures 8.06mm thick, making it a great choice for fans of compact flagship smartphones. You’ll be able to get the Xiaomi 17 in Alpine Pink, Black, Ice Blue and Venture Green colourways.

Under the hood, the Xiaomi 17 is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 system-on-chip, with 12GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 512GB of UFS 4.1 storage. It comes with Android 16 out of the box skinned with HyperOS 3 over it, as well as five major Android OS upgrades.

As for cameras, the Xiaomi 17 of course comes with Leica co-developed shooters, with a main 50MP, f/1.67 camera using the 1/1.31″ Light Fusion 950 image sensor flanked by a 50MP, f/2.0 floating telephoto using the Samsung JN5 sensor, offering a 60mm equivalent focal length, along with a 50MP, f/2.4 ultrawide and a 50MP, f/2.2 front camera.

Keeping the lights on is a 6,330mAh battery with support for 100W HyperCharge wired charging and 50W HyperCharge wireless charging. Other features of note include an IP68 dust and water resistance rating, stereo speakers, an in-display ultrasonic fingerprint sensor and of course a suite of Leica photography tools.
