Xiaomi 15T Series Keeps Leica Cameras, Introduces 5x Telephoto Zoom on the Pro for the First Time

Less than a day after its global unveiling, Xiaomi Malaysia has rolled out the red carpet for the 15T Series, consisting of the base 15T and series-topping 15T Pro. These are positioned as the slightly watered-down models of the brand’s highest-tier 15 Series, a.k.a. the ‘affordable flagship’ variants – if you like.

Part of what makes Xiaomi flagships special of late is its co-engineered Leica lenses, which it has so graciously extended to its T series too. It’s the same here, with the 15T Series sporting Leica’s Summilux optical lenses with a large aperture. On the hero model 15T Pro, the aperture increases to (f/1.62), while the 15T keeps to a modest (f/1.62).

One of the bigger upgrades on the Pro model is its 50MP Leica super telephoto OIS lens, now capable of 5x optical zoom and 10x ‘optical-like’ zoom. This extends the 15T Pro’s focal range to 115mm, where previously the 14T Pro was limited to 60mm.

The rest of the array remains largely the same, with a 50MP Leica OIS main camera retaining the Light Fusion 900 sensor from its predecessor, and a standard 12MP Leica ultra-wide lens.

As for the base model 15T, the 50MP telephoto lens does adopt the Leica touch, albeit with no 5x optical zoom. The main camera has moved away from the Sony sensor spotted on the previous generation, now backed by the Light Fusion 800 sensor with OIS, while the ultra-wide keeps the standard 12MP shooter.

You’ll also see improvements in the video recording department. Both models are now able to shoot HDR10+ videos at 4K 30fps and support recording in 10-bit log at 4K 60fps and LUT custom import for greater post-production versatility. The 15T Pro stands out a little here, with 4K 120fps shooting capabilities through the main camera.

Cameras aside, you’ll find shades of differences peppered throughout the spec sheet. Unmistakably unique to each other are their processors, with the 15T Pro powered by the Dimensity 9400+, and the 15T with the Dimensity 8400-Ultra.

Xiaomi 15T Pro specs overview

While both models pack a 5,500mAh battery, the 15T Pro has the charging advantage with support for 90W wired charging and 50W wireless charging, while the 15T only has the option of 67W wired charging.

Displays, too, are almost indistinguishable, with the series sporting a 6.83″ AMOLED panel offering 1.5K (2772×1280) resolution, 3,200 nits peak brightness, and Gorilla Glass 7i protection. The only slight difference is that refresh rates reach up to 144Hz on the 15T Pro, but only up to 120Hz on the 15T.

What you’ll find exactly the same throughout the series is the IP68-rated dust and water resistance.

An interesting feature you might want to take note of is the Xiaomi Offline Communication feature. According to Xiaomi, this enables voice calls without the need for cellular or Wi-Fi signals within a certain range (1.3km for the 15T, and 1.9km on the 15T Pro). The caveat here is that it works only between Xiaomi 15T series phones, although the brand says they are working hard to introduce the feature to more of its devices.
