Will there be a Nothing Phone (3) this year? Apparently not, according to Carl Pei

June 13, 2024

It’s almost expected now in this day and age for smartphone brands to have new generation releases every year, especially if you’re contending in the flagship segment.

But it seems London-based brand Nothing is choosing to bide their time before they’re willing to unveil the Phone (3). This was what we understood anyway from a recent video posted by Carl Pei on his official X account.

In that rather candid talking-head video, Carl Pei touched on Nothing’s approach to AI and the emergence of a “post-app world”, even taking jabs at unnamed companies that “just wants to make all their products AI all the time”. The video then cuts to Walid, a software engineer at Nothing, who then demos an early prototype of a contextual and multi-modal AI assistant which Nothing is looking to integrate into Nothing phones.

The video cuts back once again to Carl Pei for the closing, in which he says (so briefly you could almost miss it) that we can “expect to see some of these features starting to come out with the Phone (3) next year where we can really nail some of these user experiences.”

We usually don’t dwell too much on speculation, but since this came out of the horse’s mouth itself, I guess we can all erase any anticipation of a Nothing Phone (3) this year.

To jog your memory, we have already had a Nothing phone launch early this year with the Phone (2a). But that served as a mid-ranger, or in other words, an ‘SE’ or ‘Lite’ version of the Phone (2) which released in 2023.

Psst, we were lucky enough to review the Nothing Phone (2a). See what we thought about it!

Then, we also have the CMF – a sub-brand by Nothing catered towards the affordable to mid-range segment – who is set to debut its first ever smartphone, the CMF Phone (1).

So it’s not to say Nothing is leaving the year without any horses in the race, they’re just competing on a different track.
