WhatsApp Adds Built-In Translation So You Don’t Need Google Translate Anymore

By PriceShop News September 24, 2025

WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new in-app translation feature aimed at helping users communicate more easily across different languages. The update is part of the messaging platform’s broader push to make chats more accessible to its global user base, which spans over 180 countries and includes more than 3 billion users.

The translation function is simple to use: users can long-press on any message and tap ‘Translate’ to convert the text. They can then select which language they want to translate from or to. Once downloaded, that language setting will be stored for future use, eliminating the need to redownload.

The feature will be available in private 1:1 chats, group messages, and even Channel updates. Android users will have the added benefit of enabling automatic translations for entire chat threads, meaning incoming messages in those conversations will be instantly translated without further action needed.

According to WhatsApp, all message translations will remain private and secure.

The rollout begins today and will expand gradually. Android users will initially have access to translations in six languages: English, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, Russian, and Arabic. Meanwhile, iPhone users will see broader support, with the feature launching with more than 19 languages available from the start.
