WhatsApp will (finally) let us send HD photos soon
It’s been a long time coming, but we may finally be able to send HD photos over WhatsApp in the near future. According to this article by WABetaInfo, Meta-owned WhatsApp is currently putting the feature through beta-testing on both Android and iOS, which means it is already available to a select group of users.
Having a ‘HD’ photo option simply means that WhatsApp will preserve the original image dimension, resulting in higher-res photos without the pixelated ick we have today.
Typically, WhatsApp will compress the image to make file sharing quicker, but at the expense of image quality. As such, users often resort to other platforms such as Google Drive or Telegram for photo sharing.
The HD photo feature offers a vast improvement, but not all is perfect yet. It seems that even despite maintaining the image dimension, WhatsApp will still put the image through some light compression. Furthermore, the HD feature doesn’t seem to be applied to videos, which means we’ll still have to put up with crusty looking recordings.
By default, WhatsApp will send your photos in its ‘Standard’ compressed format. But the new version will include a ‘HD’ option which you will need to select before sending. All HD photos sent will have a ‘HD’ label at the bottom left of the image.
WhatsApp will likely release the beta version of the feature to more users in the coming weeks. Until then, we’ll just have to hope it gets an official rollout soon!
