Here’s everything that’s new on the Nothing Phone (2a) Plus

By Timothy Teoh August 2, 2024

It wasn’t too long ago that we were graced with the Nothing Phone (2a). Positioned as Nothing’s contender in the mid-range segment, the Phone (2a) largely impressed with its affordable pricing and near-flagship standards, and quickly became our favourite mid-ranger when we reviewed it.

Many expected the Nothing Phone (3) to be next on the cards, but as it turns out, we’ll have to wait another year for Nothing’s succeeding flagship phone.

Instead, what we do have is the Phone (2a) Plus, and while you might have expected it to be a bigger variant as most ‘Plus’ phones usually are, it’s actually the same in size to the base Phone (2a). In fact, there are no changes to the display at all. You’ll get a 6.7″ AMOLED display offering 1084×2412 resolution, 120Hz refresh rates, 1,300nits peak brightness, all protected under a layer of Gorilla Glass 5.

It does have a few neat upgrades though, starting first with the chipset. The Phone (2a) Plus will utilize the Dimensity 7350 Pro 5G, which Nothing believes is more powerful than the Dimensity 7200 Pro on the Phone (2a), even going as far as putting the clear difference in benchmark scores on the website.

We were pretty impressed with what we saw on the Phone (2a), so it’s intriguing to see how much more power they can push on the Phone (2a) Plus while keeping to a mid-range price tag. On that note, it looks like we’ll only have a single 12GB/256GB configuration here in Malaysia.

The next upgrade comes in the form of stronger 50MP front cameras which now records up to 4K at 30fps, as compared to the 32MP on the Phone (2a) which only supported 1080p at 60fps video recording. Rear cameras, on the other hand, remains largely similar with a 50MP main OIS camera and 50MP ultra-wide lens.

On the aesthetic front, the subway-inspired design now has a shiny metallic sheen to it, which, based on pictures, seems to stand out a little more. You’ll have two colour choices: Black and Grey.

There’s also slightly faster charging on the Phone (2a) Plus, which now supports 50W wired charging compared to 45W on the Phone (2a). Batteries are maintained at 5,000mAh.

If you’re wondering, there are no changes in the Glyph Interface in functionality and design. It keeps to the three LED strips encircling the two lenses, and performs just the same as the Phone (2a).

Other than that, you’ll get support for Wi-Fi 6 and Bluetooth 5.3, along with an IP54 rating for dust and water resistant.

As of today, there are no official details of pricing and availability in Malaysia. But, the Nothing website has already listed the Phone (2a) Plus’ product page with a ‘Learn More’ link, which we take to mean it’s only a matter of time before we get the local launch.
