What exactly is the Samsung Music Frame?

By Timothy Teoh May 1, 2024

Is it a picture frame? Is it a speaker? It’s…both. The Samsung Music Frame has landed in Malaysia, and it’s now available for pre-orders. It is as it’s name suggest: a smart speaker in a picture frame design.

The Samsung Music Frame will officially retail at RM1,999. However, it’s now priced at only RM1,499 for a limited time. Installment plans are also available, starting at RM41.64/month.

What is the Samsung Music Frame?

The first of Samsung’s Frame concept came about in 2017 when the brand launched the first ever Frame TV. The whole idea was to give consumers a TV that can double as an art piece by displaying photos or digital art pieces when it’s not in use (kind of like a screen saver). You can do this with any ol’ smart TV too, but the bezels around the Samsung Frame TVs were made to resemble exactly like that of a picture frame, thus lending that art gallery element to the TV.

The Music Frame is a similar concept, except that it does not have screens and needs a physical photo or artwork to be mounted, as you would with any other picture frame. Like the Frame TV, the goal is to provide dual functionality as a home entertainment gadget while blending into your home decor.

You can swap any photo or print in the Music Frame, just as long as it measure 8 x 10 inches.

Onto the audio side of things, the Music Frame has six built-in speakers located behind the frame. It has Dolby Atmos support for 3D surround sound, plus SpaceFit Sound Pro which optimizes sound based on the surrounding space to give listeners an immersive audio experience.

You can connect to the Music Frame via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. For music streaming, the smart speakers supports both Spotify Connect and Apple Music. It is even compatible with Apple AirPlay, Google Home, and Chromecast.

If you have compatible Samsung TVs and Soundbars, you can sync the Music Frame together via the Q-Symphony feature for a home theatre-like setup.

Like all other Samsung smart home devices, your main hub of control is the SmartThings app. Here’s where you setup your connected devices, as well as access more features such as voice assistant and music streaming apps. The SmartThings app with your phone also doubles as a controller for the Music Frame.

On that note, an easier way to connect to the Music Frame is by simply tapping your mobile device on the frame. The Tap Sound feature will automatically switch the audio output from your phone to the Music Frame seamlessly.

The Music Frame comes with an angled stand for freestanding display. It also comes with wall mount brackets if you’d rather have it wall-mounted. Whichever option you choose, you will need to have a power outlet nearby to plug in the AC/DC power adapter.
