U Mobile rolls out ULTRA5G network to major transport hubs, aims for 600 sites by 2029

U Mobile, supported by EDOTCO, has deployed its ULTRA5G network to more locations throughout Malaysia, this time with in-building coverage (IBC) across six major transport hubs, enabling full indoor ULTRA5G connectivity throughout entire terminals.

The rollout covers:

  • KL International Airport Terminal 1 (KLIA T1)
  • KL International Airport Terminal 2 (KLIA T2)
  • Kota Kinabalu International Airport (KKIA)
  • Langkawi International Airport (LIA)
  • Penang Sentral
  • Terminal Bersepadu Selatan (TBS)

Unlike hotspot-based coverage, U Mobile says its ULTRA5G IBC delivers continuous 5G access across all floors and facilities within these locations. At the event, U Mobile also demonstrated Malaysia’s first live 5G RedCap camera streaming on its ULTRA5G network, highlighting the potential for wireless surveillance deployments with lower power and bandwidth requirements compared to traditional wired systems.

“U Mobile is committed to the digital ambitions of the country and has been aggressively expanding our 5G coverage across townships and states.

We have also played an active role in digitising various verticals by deploying indoor 5G coverage across various buildings, enabling seamless 5G connectivity at critical facilities such as hospitals, convention centres, government offices and retail hubs.

Today marks another huge milestone as we are delighted that our ULTRA5G experience is now also available indoors at key transport hubs such as KLIA Terminal 1, KLIA Terminal 2, KKIA and LIA, as well as Penang Sentral and Terminal Bersepadu Selatan,” – Wong Heang Tuck, U Mobile CEO

Wong goes on to state that the telco aims to hit over 600 IBC sites across Malaysia by the second half of 2029, and that the latest indoor coverage expansion is just part of U Mobile’s broader rollout strategy as it aims to equip key transport hubs nationwide with 5G connectivity. Next on U Mobile’s list of transport hubs to add indoor 5G coverage to include the likes of Kuching International Airport, Penang International Airport, Sultan Ismail International Airport, Sultan Ahmad Shah International Airport, KL Sentral and JB Sentral, amongst others.

In conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026, U Mobile also introduced its first ULTRA Tourist Plan, offering international tourists 100GB of free ultra-fast data for 24 hours via eSIM activation through QR code registration. The plan is available from 12 February to 31 December 2026 for new non-Malaysian customers with eSIM-compatible devices.
